A student’s guide to identifying and preventing cyber bullying.

Cyber bullying is real and it’s dangerous.  It’s in headlines all too often these days as literally millions of kids gain access to new technology and the seemingly lawless online world.

With incidents of cyber bullying on a dramatic rise, Twisted Scholar has released their latest anti-bullying DVD The Wild Wild Web – a students guide to preventing cyber bullying. In development for over a year, the new DVD shows students that cyber bullying is not OK and there are ways to deal with the problem safely and skillfully, in a fun yet educational manner.

Filled with real-world techniques, testimonials and comments from experts and kids, the DVD establishes an open forum where students and adults can begin discussing this new phenomenon.

“I’ve been hearing the words ‘cyber bullying’ but I didn’t really get it until I watched this DVD.  It’s not boring like some news show or school movie, it made sense to me and it’s fun to watch,” said Will, age 13.

“There’s been some talk at my high school about cyber bullying and I thought I got it, but after watching the video it helped me to better understand what it really means, and ways to stay away from getting caught up in it, which I don’t want to do!” added Colin age 15.

The Wild Wild Web is 26 minutes and comes complete with a comprehensive teacher/discussion guide developed by Emmy-award winning educational writer Lynn Brunelle.

DVD price: $69.95 (plus S/H)

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL STARRED REVIEW

… a must-have program for middle schools …

“The Wild Wild Web: A Student’s Guide to Preventing Cyber Bullying”. DVD. 26 min. Prod. by Twisted Scholar.

Gr 5-8–“Break the chain and stop the pain” is a repeated message about the triangular relationship between bullies, victims, and bystanders. Part of a “Code of Conduct” for the “Wild, Wild Web,” this rule joins two others: “If you wouldn’t say it face-to-face, don’t say it in cyberspace,” and “Tell someone.”

The endearing narrator and easy-to-remember “Code of Conduct,” repeated in song and graphics, make this a must-have program for middle school audiences.” – School Library Journal, May 2011

…informative,entertaining and timely program …

“Bullying is often thought of as cruel face-to-face interchanges, but in this age of technology, harassment can occur through e-mail communications, website social networks, phone texting, and other methods. This fine program introduces and analyzes cyberbullying, highlighting the anonymity of the aggressor and vulnerability of the victim while offering strategies to prevent abuse. Host David Roby interjects some humor into the topic through skits set at an airport and on a western-themed film set. A code of conduct evolves and is captioned onscreen. Viewers are cautioned, “If you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it in cyberspace” and “Tell someone,” among other suggestions. One dramatization, based on a true story, drives the point home by showing how a boy had to change schools when cyberbullying got out of control. Classroom scenes; advice from experts, such as Dr. Phil; and kid-friendly music and dance are an integral part of this informative, entertaining, and timely program.” – Booklist Online

FUNNY, CLEVER, EFFECTIVE!

Wow…this video not only sends a message that is catchy and entertaining, but also delivers a clear, concise and effective message that will have an impact with students! It’s appropriately funny and clever; students can’t help but remember the “tools” that are given. With all the videos out there in the world of education, I give this one “two thumbs up” and highly recommend school counselors and middle school teachers to add this to their curriculums.
